Mother of the groom dresses must be chic and elegant. They need to be classy. Some prefer a matronly look, where others still want to be stylish with their mother of the groom dress.

I wonder how it feels like to walk down the aisle, this time not as the bride but as the mother of the groom. I could feel chills under my spine but thank God, I don’t have to worry about it right now since my little boy is just turning three this March. I have a long way to enjoy motherhood and the pride of being the only girl in his life before he is finally lured by any strange woman out there. However, personal accounts coming from family friends and relatives made me realize that becoming the mother of the groom is not that easy. The experience could be very stressful both financially and emotionally but I never imagined the very one thing that could pressure them most … the dress!

Considering the fact that I was the only girl from my mother’s side, I had attended more weddings more than my brothers and cousins did. My earliest memory was way back 1983 when I became a flower girl at the age of three for my Uncle Danny’s wedding. Videos and old photographs showed me how my Granny looked awfully bad in those overly ruffled white dress. Four years ago, my Aunt Dorothy stole the scene when her skirt ripped from the hips all of a sudden just as she sat on the pews during the wedding of his son Rey. Just recently, my best friend Kin took the vows with his long time girlfriend and I witnessed how my Tita Helen uncomfortably adjusted the sleeve of her gown every now and then. Although those wedding ceremonies went very well, one can never forget the embarrassing memories brought by those mother of the groom dresses.

Today, there are numerous magazines, television shows and sites that would cater to wedding and party needs. Well, here are five most practical tips I have learned for mothers before buying their dress. I know these could help as you prepare for a fantastic experience.

1. Decide on what you really want to wear – Buying on a rush is absolutely a big no unless you are inviting catastrophe on such a memorable occasion. Plan ahead on what to wear and imagine how you would look on it. From here, you can start browsing for styles and compare prices. You will boost your self-confidence and save money as well.

2. Check your weight and stay close to it – You don’t want to end up walking in an over-sized or too-tight dress on the big day. That would give you so much anxiety and discomfort. At least two months before the wedding, maintain your beautiful physique to make sure that your dress would fit.

3. Ask for suggestions – If it’s your first time to play the part and you are the type of person who barely dresses for occasions, asking for suggestions from family and friends could be a great help. They would give you honest and sincere advices on what particular attire would best fit you. You can also call the mother of the bride and share ideas on what to wear. This could be the start of a wonderful friendship.

4. Consult the bride – Well I hope you’re not another Viola Fields just like in the movie Monsters-in-Law who practically did everything to sabotage his son’s wedding. Have a warm little chat with the bride and know her feelings. The colors and style you might be planning for your dress could outshine her gown and take too much attention during the ceremony. Choose to wear something elegant yet simple which will complement the motif of the occasion.

5. Be happy – Your emotion and disposition will give an impact to your dress. Regardless of the style and color of what you’re wearing, if you are the proud and loving mother you are ought to be, then definitely you will radiate on that wonderful day.
